Buff, a shortened form of buffalo, comes from the 16th and 17th century when the word was used to describe a buttery tanned ox leather — a thicker, more robust kind, now known as chamois. Although decorative today, in its time it was commonly associated with fighting and used for protection.

Fallow is a faded caramel color and is one of the oldest color names in the English language. Its origin references farmland resting between seasons of use to replenish the soil, as well as animal fur, as Beowulf used it to describe horses.

Deep Tyrian has long been documented all along the Mediterranean. Associated with power and royalty, Tyrian-dipped cloth was worth its weight in gold because it was made of two types of regional shellfish. Ultra Light Violet is inspired by two beautiful shades: Mauve and Violet. The color Mauve was accidentally discovered in 1856 by William Perkins, a young scientist experimenting with new ways to extract quinine from coal tar to treat malaria. Violet was used with gusto 20 years later by the impressionists — so much so, they were accused of suffering from “violet-omania.”
